Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins debuted in 1988 at the Royal Canadian Mint. The coins have been issued each year since that time and are outsold on an annual basis by only the American Silver Eagle. The coins feature new security elements that were introduced in 2014. These include radial lines in the background field on both sides of the coin, as well as a newer privy mark on the reverse. The maple leaf privy on this field is micro-laser engraved and includes the date mark of the coin with the last two digits only. This 22 inscription within the privy is only visible under magnification.

She has appeared on the obverse of Canadian coins throughout her reign, with this portrait serving as the fourth-generation depiction of Elizabeth II. The effigy was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.

The reverse side of the 2022 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf Coin comes with a sugar maple leaf. The maple leaf species is found throughout North America, with the sugar maple leaf the most common species of the tree found in Canada. Designed in 1979, this image of the sugar maple leaf comes from Walter Ott.
