The Britannia coin program launched in 1987 with a gold bullion release. This coin served as Britain’s response to other bullion coin programs such as the Gold Krugerrand, American Eagle, and Canadian Maple Leaf. In addition to the 1 oz version, fractional Britannia coins are also available. In 1997, The Royal Mint launched the silver version of this acclaimed design, followed by the platinum edition in 2018.

On the obverse of 1 oz Platinum Britannia Coins there is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This image is credited to Jody Clark and features Her Late Majesty facing right with the George IV State Diadem resting upon her head. Beneath the portrait, you’ll find Clark’s initials inscribed. There are other inscriptions as well that read Elizabeth II, D G REG F D, 100 Pounds.

The reverse side of British Platinum Britannia Coins contains a depiction of Britannia holding a trident and shield. She also wears a helmet and robes that flow in the wind off the coast of England. The background consists of an anti-counterfeit radial pattern, while the rim contains inscriptions of the coin’s hallmarks.
