In 1980, the Rand Refinery and South African Mint introduced fractional-ounce gold into the series at a time when the Gold Krugerrand represented 90% of the gold market. This introduction came just one year after the Krugerrand gained competition in the form of the new Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin.

The former President of the South African Republic, Kruger was born in what was then known as the Cape Colony and would go on to not only be an influential figure in the Boer movement, but also serve four terms as President of the South African Republic.
For the reverse face of 2023 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins, the mint features the Springbok antelope. A well-known animal throughout southern Africa, the Springbok is the emblem of the modern Republic of South Africa. This design first appeared on South African coinage in the 1930s.
