The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf Series in 1979. The 1979 to 1981 dates included only the 1 oz gold coin with .999 purity. In November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint enhanced the purity of the coins to 24-karat gold and introduced both the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.

Designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, this portrait of Elizabeth II is notable for its lack of a crown. This is a rare depiction of the Queen and follows the tradition of her father, King George VI, in leaving a crown out of the effigy.
The reverse field of the 2023 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin comes with a vision of the sugar maple leaf. This image was created in 1979 by Walter Ott and captures a realistic view of the nation’s official emblem.
