The Lunar Series III collection started in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse. Unlike some other collections, the Perth Mint’s lunar coins follow the exact 12-year cycle of the Zodiac, starting with the Year of the Mouse and concluding with the Year of the Pig.
In 2023, the Year of the Rabbit returns for the first time since 2011. This is the first appearance of the Water Rabbit since 1963. Each of the animals in the Zodiac is represented by five iterations of Earth, metal, wood, fire, and water.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2023 1/4 oz Gold Lunar Rabbit Coins. This portrait of the Queen was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark and is now the definitive, final effigy of the Queen following her passing in September 2022. Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
In the reverse design of 2023 Australian Gold Lunar Rabbit Coins, the Perth Mint offers a design from Ing Ing Jong. One of two designs she created this year for the Lunar Series III release, this depiction shows a rabbit playfully sprinting through a field.
