Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins were first launched in late 1986 as Australian Gold Nugget Coins. At this point in time, the series focused on reverse imagery of historic gold nuggets discovered in Australia. The program shifted in 1990 to become the Australian Gold Kangaroo, mirroring the design concept of the then-newly-released Australian Silver Kookaburra.
In the new Gold Kangaroo Series, the mint shifted from featuring a different design on the reverse of each weight to sharing a single design across all weights. However, that design would change each year in the series, unlike the Gold Nuggets which had the same designs each year.
Queen Elizabeth II makes her final appearance on 2023 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroos. With the Queen’s death in September 2022, Perth Mint is moving to develop a portrait for King Charles III. Until such a time as that is ready, 2023 Gold Kangaroos will feature the Queen’s effigy with a special dual date honoring her reign. This is on the obverse and reads 1952-2022.
A kangaroo is depicted in the reverse design of the 2023 Australian Gold Kangaroo. This art from Ing Ing Jong shows the kangaroo looking back over its shoulder toward a eucalyptus tree and grass on the horizon behind it.
These 2023 1/4 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Each coin comes in an acrylic capsule and this weight has a limited mintage of just 150,000 coins for the year.
